GST Annual Return Filing

GSTR-9

Every regular GST taxpayer whose aggregate turnover for the year is above ₹2 crore files an annual return in GSTR-9, and above ₹5 crore a self-certified reconciliation statement in GSTR-9C with it. We match the year's sales, tax paid and input tax credit in your books with your GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-2B, list the differences for you to settle, and file after you approve.

For FY 2025-26, GSTR-9 is due by 31 December 2026. Input tax credit missed for that year, and corrections to its GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, can be made only in returns filed by 30 November 2026 (or before the annual return, if that is filed earlier), so the books are best matched before then.

At a glance

What this service covers

What is checked before filing

  • Sales matched

Sales in your books are matched with every GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B of the year, with credit notes, debit notes and amendments, so that the annual figures agree.

  • Input tax credit matched

Credit claimed in GSTR-3B is matched with GSTR-2B and your purchase register; credit reversed during the year, or claimed in the next year, is shown in the tables the form sets for it. For FY 2025-26 several detailed tables stay optional (Notification 05/2026-Central Tax).

  • Short-paid tax settled first

When matching shows tax paid short during the year, it is paid with interest through Form DRC-03 before the annual return is filed. Credit not claimed in GSTR-3B cannot be claimed through GSTR-9.

  • GSTR-9C above ₹5 crore

Above ₹5 crore of turnover, the reconciliation statement GSTR-9C, which ties the audited accounts to GSTR-9, is filed with it. It is self-certified by the taxpayer; a CA's certificate is no longer required.

Questions

Frequently asked

Something else on your mind? Call the office - it is always the same number.

Is GSTR-9 compulsory?

Not when aggregate turnover for the year is up to ₹2 crore: such taxpayers are exempt from FY 2024-25. Above ₹2 crore, every regular taxpayer files GSTR-9 for each GST registration by 31 December after the year (31 December 2026 for FY 2025-26). Above ₹5 crore, a self-certified GSTR-9C is filed with it.

Who does not file GSTR-9?

Composition taxpayers file GSTR-4 instead, by 30 June after the year. Input service distributors, persons deducting or collecting tax at source (TDS / TCS), casual taxable persons, non-resident taxable persons and suppliers of online services from outside India (OIDAR) do not file GSTR-9.

What is the late fee for GSTR-9?

₹50 a day (₹25 CGST + ₹25 SGST) when turnover is up to ₹5 crore, ₹100 a day from ₹5 crore to ₹20 crore, and ₹200 a day above ₹20 crore. The total is capped at 0.04% of turnover in the state (0.5% above ₹20 crore). Where GSTR-9C is due, the fee runs until both GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C are filed. A taxpayer who does not file also gets a notice in GSTR-3A asking for the return within 15 days.

Can input tax credit missed during the year be claimed in GSTR-9?

No. Credit is claimed only in GSTR-3B; GSTR-9 only reports the credit already claimed. For FY 2025-26, missed credit can still be claimed in a GSTR-3B filed by 30 November 2026, or before the annual return is filed if that is earlier. So filing GSTR-9 early also closes the window for credit and corrections.

Can GSTR-9 be revised after filing?

No. Once filed, GSTR-9 cannot be revised, which is why the figures are matched and approved before filing. Tax found short later is paid through Form DRC-03.

What if returns of earlier years are still pending?

A GST return cannot be filed more than three years after its due date; the portal has enforced this since 1 December 2025. Pending annual returns of older years should be filed before they pass that limit, and GSTR-9 opens only after every GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B of its year is filed.
